Winery: Catalina Sounds
The Sound of White. Being in a place where you can hear nothing. Just like walking through our vineyard in the Waihopai Valley in winter. Surrounded by vines covered in snow. It’s white on white. The inspiration for our wine and vineyard name. 10 years ago the land where the Sound of White vineyard now sits was a blank canvas. A peaceful, remote haven, in the snowy shadows of the majestic Waihopai Valley Ranges. It is an intriguting place in Marlborough, with its own fine line of mulit climatic conditions and 3 distinct soil types, which all play a key part in the wines it produces. A unique site which Winemaker Peter Jackson is truly passionate about. Only the best fruit comes from the Sound of White vineyard. The wines are compelling, honest and pure and they speak specifically to the Waihopai Valley. They are beautifuly defined with a clear backbone of acidity and effortless power. Wines from this site are only hand-picked with a minimal intervetion approach and they are aged in large oak vessels. The wine is rich and textural whilst retaining a fresh vibrancy.
Wine Maker: Peter
Peter’s philosophy is simple – source outstanding fruit from exceptional vineyard sites. He believes the most critical decision a winemaker makes is deciding when to pick. Once harvested, his role is to simply steer the fruit in the right direction in order to best express the vibrant fruit flavours that Marlborough is renowned for while respecting the subtle differences of each site. Peter’s aspiration at Catalina Sounds is to continue producing excellent quality wines of beautiful fruit expression, interest, finesse and balance. He strives to create wines of great honesty and integrity that are true to their site, while attempting to incorporate complexity and longevity into the wines.
